Using Technology

One area, which has always proved to be difficult in assessment/development centres, is the gathering of behavioural evidence. Assessors were often challenged with the need to observe and record the evidence from more than one participant at the same time and even with the best will in the world, crucial evidence can either be missed or overlooked.

To overcome this, assessment/development centres have moved towards exercises such as In-Tray where the participants were asked to solve a number of requests or problems, however a big challenge was then presented in how to mark these exercises and interrupt the responses and the downside of this type of exercise was that you were not able to observe the behaviours that lead up to the conclusion of the exercise.

To overcome the difficulties of gathering evidence, zell consulting has developed a process to digitally record behaviour as it happens. Using software that has been specially developed so that centre participants behaviour can be recorded, with individual records being compiled, which capture critical actions.

The software will then be used to analyse the recorded event and classify the behaviours as set by the assessors. The software has what we call an interactive viewer, which allows you to assess at an individual level all that took place in certain activities.

This approach allows you to design behavioural categories, which in turn will allow you to record information on any aspect of performance. The software allows direct capture of digital video, with a choice of downloading "live" or watching at a more convenient time. Watching at a more convenient time allows all of the assessors to observe and debate the behaviour seen and of course you can watch the behaviour again and again.
